Music
On a scale from 1-10 how important is music to your emotional and spiritual well-being?
What song have you listened to more than once lately because it is meaningful to you?
Our Experience
A dear friend who I rarely get to see called me today. We met over forty-five years ago when he was a freshman at Duke University and I was his Inter-Varsity staff worker.
“You’re calling a week early, aren’t you,” I said, assuming that Duke men will be NCAA basketball campions this time next week.
“Forget that nonsense,” he said.
“I want to share some songs with you. We can talk about them later.”
He told me about three songs that have meant a lot to him lately, one particularly that makes him think about our friendship.
What were they? From Five for Fighting,
- A Hundred Years
- The Riddle
- Superman
After listening through them once, I knew that they are worth sitting with. What music we listen to tells us a lot about ourselves and something about those who mean a lot to us.
“So, Libby, How important is music to your emotional and spiritual well-being.”
“On a scale of 1-10, 8-9,” she says.
“Do you have one recently that means a lot?”, I ask.
“The Blessing, the UK Version,” she responds immediately.
“The line about your children being blessed, and their children and their children. I love that!”
I recently sent the song, Amen, by Natalie Layne to twelve friends and family, a record for me. I heard back from three and suspect that no more than that listened to it and it was probably too peppy anyway. (In my defense, according to the Enneagram I am a certified 7 Enthusiast.)
What song has meant something to you lately?
Let me know with a reply.
