Swing Therapy

Do you have a porch or outdoor swing? If so, how often do you use it when the weather is good?

Our Experience

Studies show that couples who have a porch or outdoor swing are happier than couples who do not.
Okay. I just made that up.

Libby and I have had a swing on our porch for twenty-four years. I just put up two hammock-seat swings under a tree
in our front yard.

“Swinging on my back yard swing was my favorite activity as a kid,” Libby says.
The porch swing is her favorite place now.

What are the benefits of a swing?

  1. It holds us up. It is the closest thing to being gently carried as an adult.

  2. It slows us down. One cannot be in a hurry when in a swing.

  3. It makes us calm. Check your pulse after five minutes and you will see.

  4. It creates space for us to think and reflect. Important insights emerge while on a swing.

  5. If it is big enough it invites company. Even if it is not big enough.

  6. It is hospitable. Our guest will always choose the swing.

  7. It is disarming. It is hard to be mad or threatening in a swing. And if one refuses to sit in the swing an issue is undeniable.

Are you swing deprived?

No wonder you are so grumpy, irritable and demanding.

Get creative. Find a place for a swing.

(A glider or rocker can serve the same purpose.)
